Preparing for Your Engagement Session: How to Make it Truly You

You’re engaged—cue the happy tears and a hundred ring selfies! Now it’s time to document this chapter with an engagement session that reflects your story, your vibe, and everything in between. As a photographer, I believe your session should feel like a celebration, not just a posed hour of “smile here” and “tilt your chin there.” Let’s make it real. Let’s make it yours.

Here are some of my favorite tips to help you feel confident and connected heading into your shoot:

1. Start With the Little Details: Nails, Hair, and Grooming

You’d be surprised how much a fresh manicure or a little hair touch-up can boost your confidence. Your hands will be in the spotlight (hello, ring shots!), so treat yourself to a nail appointment. Whether you rock your natural curls, get a blowout, or schedule a trim for your partner, feeling good in your skin always translates on camera.

2. Dress in Earthy, Neutral Tones

Soft, natural tones photograph beautifully—especially in outdoor light. Think creams, sage, dusty rose, rust, and taupe. These tones complement the environment without clashing or stealing the show. Avoid logos or bright neons that can distract from your faces (and your love). Also, plan ahead for weather—layer up if it’s chilly, or opt for breezy fabrics on warmer days.

3. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of twinning, aim to complement each other. Choose outfits from the same color family or ones that have a nice contrast while still feeling cohesive. And please—give those clothes a quick iron or steam. Wrinkles may not seem like a big deal in person, but the camera will notice.

4. Share Your Vision With Me

Got a Pinterest board? A specific location or vibe in mind? Share it! I want to know if you’re dreaming of moody forest romance, cozy campfire cuddles, or windswept mountaintop magic. The more I know, the better I can prepare to capture it all in a way that feels authentic and intentional.

5. Think Outside the Box—Make It You

Your engagement session doesn’t have to be stiff or traditional. Love fishing together? Let’s hit the river. Motorcycle sunset ride? I’m there. Wine picnic in the hills? Say no more. These photos are meant to reflect your connection and your lifestyle—not just fill a frame. The best sessions happen when couples bring their personalities and passions into the picture (literally).

6. Get in the Right Headspace

Before your shoot, take a deep breath. Go on a coffee date, play your favorite song in the car, or spend a few minutes laughing together. This isn’t just about pretty pictures—it’s a chance to pause and soak in this sweet season of life together. The more relaxed and connected you feel, the more your photos will radiate love, joy, and you.

So let’s create something beautiful, something genuine. When you show up as yourselves, magic happens—and I can’t wait to capture
